Wiss Sons, Inc., Newark Store in Central Ave

The newest addition to East Orange's Central avenue shopping section arrived today with the opening of a Wiss Sons, Inc., jewelry store at 554 Central avenue, at the corner of Evergreen place. Mrs. Frederick C.J. Wiss cut the ribbons at the entrance of the store in a ceremony which marked its opening.

The main store of the company has been at 665 Broad street, Newark, since 1911. The Wiss company was started by Jacob Wiss in Newark in 1848. His grandson Jerome B. Wiss, is president of the company. An annex to the Newark store, the Wiss gift shop, is at 22 West Park street, Newark.

The company is one of the few merchandising establishments in Essex County which has been operated by the same family for nearly a century. The original shop was a small cutlery shop with a St. Bernard dog walking a treadmill to furnish power for grinding of razors, knives and shears.

Also participating in the opening ceremony this morning were Frederick W. Sinon, vice president of the company; Norman F. Wiss, treasurer, and H.V. Paul, general manager.

Five pictures of the store were retrieved from the Library of Congress.
