Three generations of the Wiss family were present this morning when Mrs. Frederick C.J. Wiss cut a ribbon in front in Broad street to begin a second century of business for the firm. Mrs. Wiss then entered the store to make the first sale of the store's 101st year of business.

Mrs. Wiss is the widow of one of the sons of Jacob Wiss, who founded the business in Bank street in 1848 on the site where the Prudential Insurance Co. building now stands.

A gathering of 250, including representatives of other Newark stores, heard an invocation by Rev. Dr. Marshall C. Muir, pastor of Munn avenue Presbyterian Church, East Orange.

Tells of Start

Jerome T. Wiss, grandson of the founder and now president of the firm, which has a branch in East Orange and soon will open another store in Montclair, gave a brief history of the company. He pointed out that the small cutlery shop started by his grandfather grew into the present jewelry store, largest in Newark, as well as largest shears and scissors manufacturing plant in the world, located in Littleton avenue.

The gold-handled shears used by Mrs. Wiss to cut the ribbon were presented Mayor Murphy. The mayor congratulated the firm on its centenary and added: "I wish we had about 50 more firms like the Wiss company in Newark.:

This afternoon a Wiss collection of gems valued at approximately $1,000,000, went on exhibition at Newark Museum. The exhibit, to last through the week, was featured this afternoon and will be again Thursday night by a diamond cleaving by Lazare Kaplan, cutter of the famous Jonker diamond.
