1958-05-11 Wiss Stores Marks 110th

Wiss Stores, the outgrowth of a tiny cutlery shop set up in Library Court, just off Bank St in 1848, tomorrow will begin a celebration of its 110th anniversary. A sale will be held in all of the organization's four stores.

The business was founded by a young Swiss craftsman, Jacob Wiss, who had come to this country three years earlier. When he turned out his first shears, razors and knives, a St. Bernard dog padded on a treadmill to provide the power.

The store later was expanded with the addition of silverware, diamonds, watches and other merchandise. During the latter part of the 19th Century, Frederick and Louis Wiss, sons of the founder, operated the store and moved to large quarters at 683 Broad St. The Newark store moved to its present site at 665 Broad in 1914.

Activities Separated

The store and the manufacturing activity were separated and the store was incorporated as a separate business entity in 1922, Jerome B. Wiss, a grandson of the founder, becoming its first president. A gift and china section was opened at 22 W. Park St. in 1939, doubling the floor space.

A branch in Central Ave., East Orange, was opened in 1945, and another in Church St., Montclair, three years later. Another gift shop, leased in Koos Bros., Rahway, opened in 1951.

Victor Paul was named president and Jerome Wiss became chairman of the board in 1955.
