1972-07-07 Wiss Jewelers Campaign Draws Interest

Evening News Staff Writer

Wiss Jewelers' "Do Something Beautiful" campaign has generated so much interest throughout the area, it was reported yesterday, that more than 300 nominations have been received since the drive was launched in February.

Richard S. Paul, president of the jewelry firm with stores in Newark, Montclair, Paramus, Short Hills, Woodbridge, Wayne and Nanuet, N.Y., said that each mail delivery brings in two or three responses.

Chagrined because of the current prevalence of violence and cruelty in our society Wiss determined to see what it could do to focus attention on the nice gestures people make to one another without their efforts ever coming to public attention.

Wiss got the campaign under way in February when it ran off 10,000 brochures and inserted them in statements mailed to its customers.

Meanwhile, appropriately adorned models have been passing out "Do Something Beautiful" buttons to visitors at all of the major shopping centers.

Also in cooperation with the operators of The Mall in Short Hills, Wiss arranged for the use of its models, literature and buttons in conjunction with The Mall's observance of "The Beautiful Month of May."

Thus far, Wiss has conferred honors upon Newark's Mayor Kenneth Gibson in recognition of his "Action Now" program selected Paramus' Mayor Charles E. Reid for his "Highway Beautiful" drive, and chose Miss Marcia Macomber of Upper Montclair for her efforts beautifying the lawn of Montclair High School. Each received a suitably inscribed bowl.

Wiss' campaign will continue through the next several months, until February 1973, when the store will pick a grand prize winner as part of its 125th anniversary celebration.

Thus far, nominations have been made for persons who were described as having some of the following qualifications:

A-Kindness, guidance and inspiration to young people over a period of 30 years; b-comforted a neighbor in distress and aided her in getting to a hospital; c-during a span of 40 years taught children in a religious school to respect others; d-gave dolls she was saving for her own youngster to a homeless child; e-showed compassion for an elderly man without family or friends.
