What I recall about Allen Jenkins

by Norm Wiss, Jr., 2012

After my Grandfather died in 1931, we moved across the street to my Grandmother's house at 26 Lincoln Avenue, Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ. It was a summer home and Allen and Theresa Jenkins took care of both the house and grounds. My grandparents always rented a house in Belmar, NJ for the Jenkins family to stay. Theresa cleaned the house and cooked and Allen chauffeured, did maintenance on the house and keep a very weed-free lawn. The property was two lots with the house on only one. The grass received much loving and tender care and was manicured for a croquet layout which was used constantly. As the house was only three houses from the ocean and the badge admitting entrance to the beach, many people walked by and would greet Allen and stop for a brief chat. Allen was well liked by all. So, it was in the 30's that I got to know Allen. I don't remember any specific stories but he helped me set up an amateur radio receiving station in the garden shed and helped my Grandmother with her annual canning of different jellies and fruits which she bought from the green grocers who plied the allies of Avon. Often, he would drive me and my brothers to swimming lessons or to Asbury Park to the amusement arcades. And, all cars were kept spotless and free from salt. He also drove my Father to and from the railroad station for his daily commute to Newark. I often accompanied Allen when he went to the fishing boat docks on Shark River to buy freshly caught fish, clams or lobsters.

During the winter months, Allen was based in the executive garage attached to the Wiss factory where he took care of family cars and was on call to run errands and chauffeur my grandmother. He was well liked by all the employees when he came into the office or plant . Allen was soft spoken, polite and did not have an agenda to press on others. He would discuss and share ideas without malice but with dignity. As a teenager at Avon, we shared many thought and ideas during those summer months.

His son, Cortland was called Junior and worked for Wells Cadillac-Oldsmobile Co. in South Orange, NJ. I do not remember the dates. Theresa worked on and off for my wife and me doing general house work before and after Allen died. His death was very sad to all of us and especially to me, as I happened to be visiting him when he passed away. He was a great man and someone whom I trusted and looked up to during those years when our paths were parallel.
