Roger Thurston Lyford, Jr., age 70, passed away on October 17, 2021, at Penn Presbyterian Hospital due to complications from a breakthrough case of Covid-19. He was predeceased by his parents Cornelia Degerberg and Roger Lyford Sr., and his brother Jerome Lyford. He is survived by his brothers Philip Lyford (Mary), George Degerberg (Virginia), his sisters Rebecca Lyford (John), Katherine Degerberg (John) and Mary Leyden (Jim) and seven nieces and nephews. He attended Gladwyne Elementary and the Episcopal Academy, completing his senior year at Miramonte High School in California. He was a member of the football team, soccer club, and placed fourth in the state in wrestling for his weight class in 1969. Although plagued with mental health issues starting in his 20’s, he had a great sense of curiosity, an incredible work ethic, was funny, caring and always had a twinkle in his eye. Roger enjoyed sketching, storytelling and cooking for his family brought him great joy. His uncle, Dick Raugh, perfectly summarized his life: “Roger was the delectable baby at my wedding 70 years ago. I enjoyed his boundless energy and good nature as a child and suffered his losses, while admiring his persistence in fighting the odds and get on, no matter what. I salute his fragile existence.” His family will greatly miss him and his good cheer. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Betty Best and Gena Rice, his two group home caregivers, and John Bell, Roger’s close friend for many years. They were selfless in doing for Roger whatever needed to be done and were greatly appreciated by his family. A private family Memorial will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Meals on Wheels.
