1938-11-05 Man Is Held for Jewel Theft

A man carrying a social security card which bore the name George Andrew Gibson, 49, was held at police headquarters today on a grand larceny charge after Deputy Chief Haller declared the prisoner admitted theft of platinum and gold ring settings valued at $2,500 from Wiss & Sons, Inc., 665 Broad street.

The rings disappeared from the store October 29, when a man answering the prisoner's description asked to be shown diamond settings. While examining the tray full of rings, the "customer," asked to see fraternal emblems. When the clerk turned to reach another tray, the prisoner and rings disappeared.

The prisoner was arrested at Broad and Market streets today when Traffic Officer Michael Boylan noted he resembled the description.

At headquarters detectives noticed a cylindrically shaped microscope attached to a watch chain was the same as that described by the victimized jewelry clerk.
