1962-08-22 400 of Wiss Workers Out

About 400 of 600 employes of J. Wiss & Sons Co. have walked off the job in what the company described today as "an unauthorized strike."

The Wiss concern, which manufactures shears and scissors, operates plants at 33 Littleton Ave., Newark, and at 228 Burnett Ave., Maplewood. A Wiss spokesman said almost all employes at the Maplewood plant were off the job and that about 250 were out in Newark. He said the strike began Monday in Maplewood.

The strikers are members of Local 301, Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Workers, AFL-CIO. A union spokesman said the dispute involved work rules, specifically the treatment of employes by foremen.

The company said union officials had urged the employes to return to work and had denied any connection with the walkout.
