The look and the sound were young yesterday when some 300 teen-agers and shoppers jammed Military Park for a "Youth Day" celebration.

The event was sponsored by Wiss Jewelers and featured a local rock bard, the Soul Dukes, who played for foot-tapping and in some cases-dancing.

Several models distributed some 5,000 red and white "I Am Loved" balloons and pins to people in the park and in front of the Broad Street store.

According to Richard Paul, Wiss president, the event was planned to show that "Newark is growing and thriving." He said there is "too much emphasis on the negative aspect of the city."

Promotional Aspect

Paul said the celebration also had a promotional aspect, as the five stores were introducing a new line of youth-style jewelry, featuring the entire "I Am Loved" line.

The band arrived later than planned, but once the sound of electrified guitar and drums filled the downtown section of the city, the park began to fill. One man watched from a top of a flagpole at 744 Broad St.

Most of the people stood by tapping their feet-but a few began dancing while others clapped their hands in time to the music.

"They should have this kind of entertainment every Saturday in the park," said Shirley Thomas, 17, of Newark. "It gives us something to do."

Lynda Bradford, 16, also of Newark, added: "We think it is nice."
