1969-06-15 Thieves Pry Window Steal Rugs

A black car with three men and two women pulled up in front of Wiss Jewelers, 465 Broad St., Newark, about 4:15 p.m. yesterday. The occupants got out and walked to the display window.

Within minutes, one of the men was overheard telling the others:

"Let's get out of here."

With them, police said, apparently went a $6,650 marquise diamond ring and a $250 diamond wedding band. Police said a three-inch long wooded wedge had been used to pry open two sections of the display window.

Detectives said a woman saw the car park and the occupants get out and walk to the window. The witness then left, but returned minutes later to hear one man tell the others to leave. She said she saw the man hurriedly hide a long piece of wire apparently used to fish out the rings. The wedge was found in the windows.
