Mrs. Mildred Wiss Smith of Kenilworth Drive and the Rev. Dr. Herbert H. Cooper were presented certificates of merit for service to the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America at the meeting of Pack 1, Christ Church, held at the church last Friday evening.
Two-hundred and fifty pack members, as well as scouts from Troop 15, also of Christ Church, committees of both scouting organizations and parents of cub and boy scouts were on hand to witness the presentations.
Mrs. Smith was among the founders of the Cub Scout movement in the United States and was the first chief den mother of Pack 1. Dr. Cooper served as Pack 1's second cubmaster and was scoutmaster of Troop 15 from 1936 to 1939. The presentation to Mrs. Smith was made by Dr. Cooper, rector of Christ Church, while his certificate was presented by the Rev. Richard B. Andersen, assistant rector of the church.
The certificate presented to Mrs. Smith read as follows:
We, the Committee, Den Mothers and Cub Scouts of Pack 1 of Christ Church of Short Hills, New Jersey, present to you on this evening of our Pack Meeting, April 26, 1968, this CERTIFICATE of MERIT which expresses our appreciation to you for your outstanding work and devotion to the Cub Scouts of the Boy Scouts of America.
"It was through your efforts as one of the founders of Cub Scouting in 1932 that this excellent program was first introduced to scouting in the United States. Furthermore, as the first Chief Den Mother in our country, you and others were able to obtain our charter, the first charter for Cub Scouts, from the headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America then located in Washington, D.C.
"We salute you by saying that if it had not been for you, we would not be able to say tonight 'WE ARE PACK 1'."
Dr. Cooper's certificate read as follows:
"We, the Committee, Den Mothers, Cub Scouts of Pack 1 and the Boy Scouts of Troop 15 of Christ Church of Short Hills, New Jersey wish to honor you on this evening of April 26, 1968 for your outstanding leadership in scouting as well as the ever faithful and alert way in which you have exercised your pastoral ministry to all.
"You were the second Cubmaster of Pack 1 and Scoutmaster of Troop 15 through the years of 1936 to 1939, and you have provided assistance ever since. We present to you this CERTIFICATE of MERIT which expresses our appreciation and gratitude to you for your work and devotion to the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts of America."
