SHORT HILLS, N.J., July 5 –Carleton Ford Smith, a retired executive of C.H. Stuart & Co., packaging designers of Newark, N.Y., died yesterday at the Bay Head Yacht Club. He was 76 years old and lived at 38 Kenilworth Drive.

Mr. Smith was a 1917 graduate of Hobart College.

He leaves his wife, the former Mildred Wiss; two sons, Garrett P. and Roger S.; two sisters and five grandchildren.
