Carleton Smith, former mayor of Newark, dies

NEWARK – Funeral services for Carleton F. Smith, 76, of Bay Head, N.J., a former mayor of Newark who died July 4 in Bay Head, will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Christ Church, Short Hills, N.J. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may contribute to the American Heart Assn., 70 E. Park St., East Orange, N.J.

Mr. Smith served a term as mayor of Newark from 1931-1932. He was born in Geneva and was a member of the class of 1917 at Hobart College, Geneva. Mr. Smith worked for the Geneva Preserving Co. and Patent Cereals Co. in Geneva, and later with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. of Akron, Ohio.

He moved to Newark in 1924 and was employed here by the First National Bank from 1924-1931, later joining the C.H. Stuart Co. where he worked for 29 years, retiring Jan. 1, 1960.

He was commissioned a lieutenant in the infantry in World War I, and was a charter member of Winnek Post, American Legion of Geneva. He moved to Bay Head several years ago.

Mr. Smith married Ethel Van Peirson in Newark in 1922. Several years after her death, he married Mildred S. Wiss of Short Hills and moved to New Jersey at that time.

Mr. Smith, in addition to being mayor of Newark, was very active in community affairs. He was a member of Ark Lodge F &AM in Geneva and the Newark Elks; treasurer of the Newark Country Club; and a member of the Newark Lyons Club, the Newark Chamber of Commerce and St. Mark's Episcopal Church.

During his 12 years in New Jersey, Mr. Smith was a member of the Baltusrol Golf Club, the Bay Head Yacht Club and a member of Christ Church of Short Hills,

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Garrett P. of Newark and Roger S. of Miami, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Wooten of East Rochester and Mrs. Eleanor Dayton of Rochester; five grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
