Carleton Ford Smith of 38 Kenilworth Drive, Short Hills, and East Avenue, Bay Head, died Tuesday at Bay Head. He was 76.
Mr. Smith was a former executive of C.H. Stuart & Co. of Newark, N.Y., from which he retired in 1960 after 29 years. He had lived in Short Hills the last 12 years.
Mr. Smith was born in Geneva, N.Y., and was a member of the class of 1917 at Hobart College. He served as a second lieutenant in the infantry in World War I. He was mayor of Newark, N.Y. from 1931-32. He was active in many organizations in that Wayne County City including the chamber of commerce, the Lions Club and the Elks and was treasurer of the Newark Country Club. He was a charter member of Winnek Post of Geneva, American Legion and of ark Lodge, F.&A.M., of Geneva. In New Jersey, he was a member of Baltusrol Golf Club, the Bay Head Yacht Club and Christ Episcopal Church, Short Hills.
Mr. Smith leaves his wife, Mrs. Mildred Wiss Smith; and two sons, Garrett P. of Newark, N.Y. and Roger S. of Miami, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Wooten of East Rochester, N.Y., and Mrs. Eleanor Dayton of Rochester, N.Y. and five grandchildren.
