Ex-Civic Leader In Oranges, Dies

GULF STEAM, Fla. – Mrs. Grace Valentine Bishop, a long-time New Jersey resident and wife of Robert Bishop, died here yesterday of a long illness. She was 69.

Born in Woodbridge, N.J., Mrs. Bishop was graduated from Smith College in 1919. She lived for 25 years in the Oranges before moving to Florida about 10 years ago.

Mrs. Bishop has been active in civic affairs and served as president of both the YWCA of the Oranges and the Women's Board of the Day Nursery of the Oranges. During World War II she helped to start the Defend America by Aiding Your Allies organization.

Besides her husband, she leaves five daughters by a previous marriage to the late Jerome B. Wiss, Newark, N.J., jeweler; Miss Jean Wiss of Orange, Mrs. Nancy Drury of Far Hills, Mrs. Jeremy Smith of Philadelphia, Mrs. Cornelia Degerberg of Gladwynne, Pa., and Mrs. Grave Gomez of Belvedere, Calif., and 22 grandchildren.

Mrs. Bishop also was married to Charles R. Hardin, Newark attorney and member of the Essex County Park Commission. He died in 1951.

Private funeral services will be held Friday in Florida.
