The Wiss Store

There was always a retail component to the business, with the store in front and the men in back. At 26 Bank Street the men in back were in several buildings. In 1887, when the factory moved up the hill, the retail stayed downtown. It then morphed into a Jewelry/Gift Shop, called "The Wiss Store." In 1911 The retail store was one of the first tenants in the Wiss Building. In January 1922 the firm incorporated and changed its name to Wiss & Sons, and then shortly thereafter to Wiss Sons, Inc.

In early 1961 the business was merged into The Fine Jewelers Guild, a subsidiary of Zale Corporation. The Sons was dropped and the stores continued to be called Wiss Jewelers. In 1976 there were eight locations. In June 1978 Zale merged the Wiss and Lambert Bros. stores to form Wiss & Lambert. In October 1986 the name of the stores was changed to Bailey Banks & Biddle.
