Maps of Frederick C.J. Wiss's Newark Homes: 1881-1926

Frederick C.J. Wiss initially lived at 26 Bank St. In 1885, at age 27, he moved to 38 Nelson Pl. In 1993, at age 35, he moved to 171 Fairmount Ave. In the mid-1920s he moved to a large apartment on South Munn Ave in East Orange. At some point afterwards the mansion at 171 Fairmount Ave. burned down. Maps are from the Newark Public Library's Digital Collection. There is one map of Nelson Pl. and four maps of Fairmount Ave.:
38 Nelson Place

1889 map of 38 Nelson Place. The word John is on the property. Likely FCJ was renting from John. Source Map: Plate 14.

171 Fairmount Avenue

In this 1873 map the street numbering was different. The property that FCJ bought, at the corner of 13th Street, is labeled 147. Source map: Newark Atlas, Sixth Ward.

1889 map of 171 Fairmount Ave. FCJ did not move here until 1893. You can see that Robert Walsh still owned the property. Source Map: Plate 26.

1901 map. The house now has a different shape. FCJ must have torn down the house and built his own mansion. No properties have homeowner names in this year. Source Map: Plate 24.

1911 map. The house has been enlarged, and homeowners are labeled again. Some of the neighboring properties have been combined, with large homes built on them. Source Map: Plate 23.

1926 map. There are no longer any homeowner names. But FCJ moved to East Orange around this time. Note the neighborhood is going downhill, as the mansion across the street became the Essex Private Hospital. Source Map: Vol. 1, Plate 4.
