Maps of Frederick C.J. Wiss's Newark Homes: 1881-1926

Frederick C.J. Wiss initially lived at 26 Bank St. In 1885, at age 27, he moved to 38 Nelson Pl. In 1993, at age 35, he moved to 171 Fairmount Ave. In the mid-1920s he moved to a large apartment on South Munn Ave in East Orange. At some point afterwards the mansion at 171 Fairmount Ave. burned down. Maps are from the Newark Public Library's Digital Collection. There is one map of Nelson Pl. and four maps of Fairmount Ave.:
38 Nelson Place

1889 map of 38 Nelson Place. The word John is on the property. Likely FCJ was renting from John. Source Map: Plate 14.

171 Fairmount Avenue

In this 1873 map the street numbering was different. The property that FCJ bought, at the corner of 13th Street, is labeled 147. Source map: Newark Atlas, Sixth Ward.

1926 map. There are no longer any homeowner names. But FCJ moved to East Orange around this time. Note the neighborhood is going downhill, as the mansion across the street became the Essex Private Hospital. Source Map: Vol. 1, Plate 4.
