Heart Attack Is Fatal to Short Hills Man, of Cutlery Firm
Norman Frederick Wiss of 17 Oaklawn Rd., Short Hills, executive vice president and treasurer of J. Wiss & Sons, Newark cutlery manufacturers, died of a heart attack last night at his summer home in Bay Head. He was 58.
He was a grandson of Jacob Wiss, a Swiss cutler and gunsmith, who founded the Newark firm more than 100 years ago.
Mr. Wiss had served as a member of the State Unemployment Compensation Commission. He was also a former vice president of the New Jersey Manufacturers' Assn.

Officer of Cutlery Firm Stricken at Shore, Dies at 58
Norman Frederick Wiss of 17 Oaklawn Rd., Short Hills, executive vice president, treasurer and a director of J. Wiss & Sons, Newark cutlery manufacturers, died of a heart attack last night at his summer home in Bay Head. He was 58.
Mr. Wiss was a grandson of Jacob Wiss, a Swiss cutler and gunsmith who founded the Newark firm in 1848.
He was born in Newark, son of Mrs. Charlotte L. Wiss and the late Frederick C.J. Wiss. He was graduated from Barringer High School and from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania in 1917. He joined the family concern after graduation. He moved to Short Hills about 30 years ago.
Mr. Wiss was an army officer during World War I. He served in the National Recovery Administration, on the National Labor Relations Board, the War Production Board, the Millburn-Short Hills draft board and the Industrial Advisory Board. He was active for many years in the American Red Cross.
Director of State Group
He was a trustee and director and a former vice president of the New Jersey Manufacturers' Assn. and a director and member of the executive committee of the North Jersey Employers' Assn. and the National Assn. of Shears, Scissors and Manicure Implement Manufacturers.
Mr. Wiss was also an officer and director of Wiss Sons, Inc., Newark jewelers. He was a former director of the U.S. Trust Co. of Newark, which later merged with the National State Bank, and a former director of Aero Mufflers Co., Bol-Inca Mining Co. and the West Co. of Philadelphia.
He was a member of Damascus Commandery No. 5, Knights Templar; St. John's Lodge No. 1, F&AM; Salaam Temple, Bay Head Yacht Club, Baltusrol Golf Club, Essex Club and Skytop Lodge. He attended Christ Church of Short Hills.
Leaves Three Sons
Besides his mother, who lives in Short Hills, Mr. Wiss leaves his wife, Mrs. Mildred Sommer Wiss; three sons, Norman F. Jr. of Livingston and Kenneth B. and Frederick D. of Short Hills, and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at Christ Church at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial Will be in Fairmount Cemetery. The family requests that in place of flowers donations be made to the Heart Fund.
