1910 Peerless Limousine

This car was purchased by Frederick C.J. Wiss at the beginning of 1910 (or end of 1909), at the same time that Allen Jenkins was hired as a chauffeur. The car and chauffeur were so his wife could also have access to a car.

For 1909 I found both 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder models of the limousine. But for 1910 I only found the Model 27 4-cylinder 30 H.P. Limousine, which sold for $5500. (If the 6-cylinder was available that year, it would have been $7000.) Here is a brochure page for this model.

James W. Mason, sold the Peerless at 982 Broad St. That is down the street from where the Wiss Office Building was under construction at the time of the car purchase. So I checked Google Streets: 982 Broad St. Sure looks like the building was built as a classy auto dealer. I could not find a vintage picture. [Archived Aug 2018 Streets picture]

Now I can't be sure that this is my great-grandparent's car in the picture, but the picture was taken on April 28, 1911, in front of the Wiss Office Building. As my great-grandfather recounted in later years, he started at the factory at 8 AM. By 11 AM he was here in this building. Then by 5 PM he was back at the factory. The chauffeur is leaning on the wall to the left, and would be Allen Jenkins. The full picture is with the Newark Public Library pictures.

Two pictures of the car in Winter 1916. Mildred Sommer was 21 years old, and Norman [Sr] was 20. The couple were dating at this time. They were married June 6, 1917.
