Mildred and Norman Wiss have invited 100 of their closest friends to a cocktail party tomorrow afternoon to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The date is Saturday but son Norman is graduating from Yale that day and they expect to be in New Haven for the commencement.
Mildred has tried to keep the reason for the party a secret but there wasn't a chance. Her friends have too good memories. Besides, a dinner given Monday by Mary and Ernie Nye in South Orange cleared up all doubt. The Wisses and Nyes have belonged to the same bridge club for 21 years, which in itself is a pretty good check on anniversaries. Whenever members have a 25th wedding celebration the rest of the club presents them with a silver bowl with all the names inscribed on it.
Last year the Allan Lees were the first to receive the bowl, next in line were Walter and Ida Morton and now Mildred and Norman. The big presentation was just about to come off with appropriate speeches when the blackout held up the ceremony. Far be it from us to give away any surprises but the same grapevine has revealed that the decorations and flowers are to be bridal white with the new bowl in a conspicuous place on the table.
New Jersey they had anything but a brilliant welcome. Trying to make time, they had crossed the state line when the blackout started. Ed knew his mother and father, the Meredith Laffeys, would be waiting up for him and his guests but there was nothing to do but pull over to the side and wait. They got home a few minutes before 1 A.M. and found the house a blaze of light in their honor.
The Laffeys plan a cocktail party Sunday afternoon for as many of Ed's friends as are left in town. In the meantime the boys are catching up on their familiar haunts in New York. When they report back to Maxwell Field all three will be sent to other fields for further flight training, so they're making up for lost time now.
